Otamatea Boarding House

Opened to the public on 6 August 2006, the Otamatea Boarding House is a two storey life-sized replica, based on the old boarding houses of the Kaipara District (circa 1910). As part of The Kauri Museum’s Northland heritage displays, the replica offers an insight into a time when everyone travelled by sea (as there were no roads or rail system), staying in the little villages which dotted the Kaipara Harbour. Each room in the boarding house is populated with antique furniture and lifelike mannequins, telling their own particular story of how they came to be staying at the boarding house in Matakohe, Northland. The Otamatea Boarding House is just one of the great things to see at The Kauri Museum, Matakohe.
