Poetry and Song Lyric Competition - Students

Student's present their poetry and song lyrics at The Kauri Museum.
29 Sep 2020

What talented young people we have in our district. On Friday 25th September the open mic performance and prizegiving night, saw a large crowd of supporters at the museum. Pupils from local schools presented their entries in our poetry and song lyric competition for school students. It was fantastic to see such confidence and enthusiasm from the students, and some wonderful poetry and song. The selection was very impressive and a credit to everyone involved. Our thanks to the students and their teachers for supporting the event and for family and all others who came to hear our young poets in action. A great night!

I Sit up in Bed - Poem by Andrew Robinson-Gooch - Age 7

I sit up in bed
I gaze out the window.
Rain pours out of the gutters.
It blocks my view of the angry Kaipara.
The boats rock
Pulling on their anchor chains dangerously
The wind howls and the clouds race.
The storm calms
The water settles and sparkles in the sun.
A rainbow spreads over the Kaipara.

I Stumbled Down - Poem by Scarlet Stephenson - Age 10

I stumbled down the muddy bank leading to the Kaipara.
I sat down and stared at the shimmering , rippling , calm water.
I gazed out at the wonderful sight of a gorgeous relaxing water.
I picked up a pink shell and tossed it out to the magical Kaipara,
It caused a ripple and a disturbance to what seemed to be the water’s
eternal rest.

Tiny boats bobbed on the horizon, the beautiful, bright sun behind them.
To my right stood an enormous kauri tree .
It’s soft shadow patting the shiny surface of the calm water.
All of a sudden a betraying water- wild, crazy, evil-
Came out of nowhere, making its eternal rest impossible.
The sky was mad, it pounded the-what use to be calm-water with heavy
raindrops.

The water got aggressive and tossed driftwood about.
Oh no, the poor boats, hit by raindrops , like bullets.
The storm finally had no reason to rage anymore.

One Moment - Song by Dānae Witiona

Intro- Opening Chorus
All I need is one more chance,
One more day,
One more moment that's all I'm asking for
All I need is one more chance,
One more day,
Please just one more moment that's all I'm asking for (Repeat X2)

Verse 1
Kia whakamahorahora to wairua ki ahau
Aha koa kore ahau
E ki te ia koe
Kei a koe hoki ahau

Chorus 2
All I need is one more chance
One more day
One more moment, that’s all I’m asking for
All I need is one more chance
One more day
Please just one more moment, that's all I'm asking for (mmm)

Verse 2
I still feel you here
Your presence is near
This feeling is quite unclear
But your all around me
Sometimes I wish that you were beside me
I don't wanna let you go
You’re always on my mind

Chorus 3
All I need is one more chance
One more chance (ad-libs)
One more day
Please just one more moment, that's all I’m asking for
All I'm asking for (ad-libs)
All I need is one more chance
One more day
One more day (ad-libs)
Please just one more moment, that's all I’m asking for (repeat X2)
