What was school like for pioneer children?

Early education began in Matakohe in 1878 and The Kauri Museum’s Pioneer School was Matakohe’s first school building. The school is complete with desks, pens, books, maps and more.

School groups can book a classroom experience in The Pioneer School including a short lesson from one of our costumed museum guides. Contact us to find out more. BOOK YOUR SCHOOL TRIP

Everyone is welcome!

We recently held a successful children's drawing workshop in the Pioneer School which was great fun. Individuals and community groups are also invited to talk to us about booking events in this space.

A peaceful native bush walk is located next to the Pioneer School. A perfect spot for your group to enjoy.

Take a good look...is there anyone here you know?

The Museum has a fascinating archive of photos and items relating to schooling in the area. If you are creating educational resources or planning something special for your class, feel free to contact us to make use of our library and archives.
