Top Travel Destination and Day Trip Experience

The Kauri Museum, the perfect family day out.

The Kauri Museum is a top holiday destination for those looking for a fantastic day out. Just a short drive from Auckland CBD, the museum welcomes visitors 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm.

When you get here there's a lovely café to enjoy refreshments before heading into the museum. Make sure you have at least two hours to spare, as visitors always tell us they are surprised at how big it is inside. It's no surprise to us being Northland's largest undercover attraction. We even have flexible tickets for those arriving late or staying in the area over the weekend. Great value for money!

We make every effort to keep you safe, with diligent cleaning and hand sanitizer stations through out. There's lots of room to stay in your bubble and our friendly staff are ready to help if you have special needs.

Discover the incredible stories of the kauri tree, and the people of the region who developed industries around its bounty in pioneering times. Today the Kauri Museum team aim to bring awareness to the value of our majestic giants, through exhibitions and programmes that focus on the precious nature of our native forests and the gifts of the kauri tree.

Discover the world's largest kauri gum collection on display, and treasures which include arts, culture and diverse collections, from jewellery to brick making. Kauri furniture, boats and musical instruments fill the galleries, along with rare and everyday items from yesteryear.

There is a huge steam powered saw mill and a two storied replica boarding house, which were both common on the Kaipara harbour when water was the primary way to get about.

Learn how to polish kauri gum when you book a Gum Polishing Experience with our specialist polisher. These are lots of fun and suitable for kids and adults alike. There really is so much to see and enjoy.

The Old School will bring back memories for some folk, as will the original Post Office and Telephone exchange. No mobile phones in those days!

A delightful day out and an easy drive over from Whangarei and the east coast beaches. Matakana, Snells Beach, Waipu and Tutukaka are all just a stones throw away. If you do need to stay overnight we welcome campervans outside and Matakohe offers many accommodation options close by, from the boutique, to cosy cabins and campgrounds. Bring your bike and enjoy the trails and bush walks in the area.

In the Taonga Gallery, rest items that speak of geology, and the peoples of the Otamatea region, their cultures and craftsmanship. The Kauri Museum is an important destination on the Kauri Coast trail, which leads travellers up to the Waipoua forest to see Tane Mahuta, before reaching the historic Bay of Islands.

The Kauri Museum also offers private tours of Totara House, a stunning Victorian Villa with period furniture and beautiful gardens, just one street over. Tours can be booked by contacting the museum and it often features as a perfect location for wedding photos.

Before you go remember to visit the Kauri Museum Gift Shop, which is filled with New Zealand made natural products, toys, books and luxury items. You can still purchase large pieces of polished kauri gum and bespoke kauri timber products.
