LOCATION

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe, Northland, New Zealand is roughly midway between Auckland (New Zealand's largest city) and the beautiful Bay of Islands. It's just two hours drive to either, depending on traffic.  Take the turn off at the Brynderwyn hills (State Highway 1) onto State Highway 12 (towards Dargaville). We are 20 minutes up the road from the turn off.

Open daily 9am to 5pm except Christmas Day.

Group discounts are available for groups of 8 or more:

ACCESS 
Please feel welcome to inform the Museum of your access  requirements.  Our staff can assist you with mobility access., including elevator assistance within the Museum. All our restrooms are wheelchair accessible, and we have complementary wheelchairs available for visitors use.

EV CHARGING POINTS

The Kauri Museum has two charging points outside the main building. These are J-1772 and Type 2 plugs. For more details click HERE.

GUIDED TOURS

Private tours of the museum, and behind the scenes special tours, are available for an additional cost. Please CONTACT US to find out more.  Tours of Totara House are available by appointment only. 

GUMDIGGERS CAFE

Visitors to the Museum are invited to have lunch at the Gumdiggers Café, conveniently located opposite the Museum. You are welcome to leave the Museum, have a refreshment, and return for a further look!

 

Gumdiggers Café in Matakohe is happy to accommodate booked groups and specialty meals with prior reservations.

GUM POLISHING

Have you ever polished kauri gum from a raw lump into a shining golden nugget? The Museum has a hands-on gum polishing experience for visitors to enjoy. Our kauri gum polisher Thelma can show you how it’s done. 
 

This activity is perfect for school groups, a great school holiday activity, and a very rewarding experience for all ages.

Gum polishing packs are also available in the Museum shop for $15. These make great gifts for all the family.

The Kauri Museum is an exciting place to come together for fun, learning and discovery.

 

Endless opportunities for educational visits exist at the Museum.

We offer educational sessions or inquiry based research that covers the  fields of social and natural sciences. Through hands on experiences, dramatic recreations, questioning and critical thinking, lessons can be built around a number of themes. 

The Kauri Museum also offer fun educational hands-on activities., including kauri gum polishing.
