LOCATION
The Kauri Museum in Matakohe, Northland, New Zealand is a 2 hour drive north of Auckland, or a 1 hour drive from Whangarei. Take the turn off at the Brynderwyn hills (State Highway 1) onto State Highway 12 (towards Dargaville). We are 20 minutes up the road from the turn off. The Museum is on the Ancient Kauri Trail to the Waipoua Kauri Forest and on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway.
Helipad transfers on request.

Visitors to the Museum are invited to have lunch at the Gumdiggers Café, conveniently located opposite the Museum. You are welcome to leave the Museum, have a refreshment, and return for a further look!

GUM POLISHING
Have you ever polished kauri gum from a raw lump into a shining golden nugget? The Museum has a hands-on gum polishing experience for visitors to enjoy. Our kauri gum polisher Thelma can show you how it’s done.
This activity is perfect for school groups, a great school holiday activity, and a very rewarding experience for all ages.

Endless opportunities for educational visits exist at the Museum.
We offer educational sessions or inquiry based research that covers the fields of social and natural sciences. Through hands on experiences, dramatic recreations, questioning and critical thinking, lessons can be built around a number of themes.
The Kauri Museum also offer fun educational hands-on activities., including kauri gum polishing.
