WHERE: The Kauri Museum, Church Road, Matakohe
COST : Included in admission to the museum.
Exhibition ONLY: $5 Door vouchers are valid for the duration of the show.

Join us for the annual exhibition from the Otamatea Quilters' group. Exquisitely crafted quilts line the Volunteers Hall and the Boarding House, showcasing a range of techniques in the craft of patchwork and quilting that reflect the creativity of the Kaipara.

Quilts in the exhibition range from entirely hand worked to machine stitched, embroidered, embellished, contemporary and traditional, all worked to a common theme.

Each year the members of the Otamatea Quilters are given a “Challenge”, allowing members an opportunity to explore the creative side of their art. This year the Challenge is “Elements of Design” – Repetition. These elements could include repetition of shape, colour, pattern, texture and line.
The Challenge is not a compulsory task but most members take the opportunity to work creatively.

This annual exhibition will go ahead, despite the advent of Covid 19, with several changes. Quilters will be in attendance Friday only over Labour weekend. Many of the quilts are for sale, though this year there will be no sales tables or raffles.

Community Quilts
Each year the Otamatea Quilters chose an organisation or charity to donate quilts to. Over the past 4 years, the group has made quilts for STAND, the Children’s Health Camp in Whangarei. Knit wear has also been donated to STAND. Materials for the 'community quilts' are donated by the quilters.

This year a number of stroller and cot quilts have been made for the Plunket Society, to give to young families who would benefit from these quilts. Many families who have previously been recipients of these quilts are very appreciative.

Brief History:
The Otamatea Quilters group was formed by a number of quilters and patchworkers in 1984, with the late Shirley Martin at the helm. Two of the members who joined in those early years still belong to the group. Margaret Needham and Elinor Beasley. An exhibition has been held each year. In the early years it was hung in The Paparoa Memorial Hall. In later years it has been hung at The Kauri Museum.

We look forward to sharing these wonderful creations with you.
